Diabetic Socks

Choosing the best socks for diabetics

Diabetic socks are non-compression foot garments that are worn by those diabetic patients who are experiencing some form of foot pain or ulcers. They tend to be lightweight, seamless cotton socks that are loose-fitting and non-binding. They may have elastic cuffs. They provide comfort and protection for diabetics against ulcers and swelling due to diabetic foot pain. The socks are designed to be loose around the toes and provide wrinkle-free support to allow the foot to breathe and be supported.

While compression socks can be found for diabetics, most diabetic socks provide minimal compression to allow the foot to properly circulate blood. They do conform to the shape of the foot and are available in non-microbial cloth for those whose feet perspire heavily.

Types of Diabetic Socks

Cotton diabetic socks can be found in many different styles and may look similar to regular crew socks, but they differ in several ways. They have a comfort stretch top, normally made of spandex; they are made of non-binding fabric, they have a breathable liner to help wick away moisture and provide air to the foot, they provide double cushioning in the heels and toes and are often silver-lined for foot odor. As well, they are seamless to prevent any compression of the skin around the toe or heel and prevent diabetic ulcers from developing from the lack of circulation in the foot.

Men's diabetic socks and women's diabetic socks are available and the socks may come in many different styles and colors to suit the individual's style. They are available in sport and casual styles as well as dress styles. They can be found in low-cut, knee-length or other styles depending on the individual's taste.

You can order both socks and shoes through a podiatrist or medical facility as well as online through many different medical supply retailers.
